BRETT SLINGSBY
My journey into the world of construction began at the age of 13, when I took on a Saturday job labouring for a builder who was a friend of my father's. Although my tasks were simple, digging holes and tidying up. I quickly became captivated by the craftsmanship and attention to detail that transformed basic structures into stunning homes for discerning clients. The experience of working on prestigious properties ignited my passion for construction and sparked a desire to understand the intricacies of the industry.
Recognizing my calling, I enrolled in a three-year bricklaying apprenticeship after graduating high school. Throughout this time, I had the opportunity to work with various companies, each offering unique perspectives on different trades and projects. This exposure not only deepened my curiosity but also solidified my commitment to the construction field. I began to appreciate the complexity beyond the exterior of a home, dedicating my spare time to learning about all facets of construction. I even offered my services to friends, tackling small projects like caulking skirting boards to gain hands-on experience and satisfaction.
After three years of honing my skills, I returned to work with the builder who first inspired me at 13. Eventually, I reached a pivotal moment in my career, I was ready to take the leap and start my own business. Now, a decade later, I continue to thrive in this industry, tackling a variety of exciting projects.
SHANE KILVINGTON
My journey into bricklaying began at the age of 21, following a fulfilling yet repetitive career as a fabricator. While I appreciated the skills I developed in fabrication, I yearned for a more dynamic and rewarding path. It wasn't until I began assisting a friend on weekends that I discovered my true passion for construction. The satisfaction of working with my hands and seeing tangible results sparked a desire for a career change.
Just two months later, I embraced the challenge of learning bricklaying, immersing myself in hands-on experience. After seven months, I confidently launched my own team, where I quickly found my rhythm. Though I faced setbacks along the way, each mistake became a stepping stone for growth. I dedicated myself to studying blueprints, watching instructional videos, and collaborating with peers to refine my skills.
In my first year, I had the privilege of working on diverse projects, including a Costa Coffee location, two residential homes, and a commercial unit for a printing company. As I tackled increasingly complex jobs, my enthusiasm for mastering intricate techniques only grew, allowing our builds to truly stand out.
Throughout my career, I’ve been proud to receive multiple 5-star reviews and achieve top ratings with NHBC, establishing a solid reputation within the building trade. For me, bricklaying isn’t merely a profession; it’s a craft that I am deeply passionate about and committed to perfecting every day.
